I'm considering purchasing an AIM Solo GPS timer for my racecar. Any opinions/comments on the unit, good bad or indifferent?

I think you might get better results in Appex speed. I would also like some information on the GPS timers.

I use the AIM GPS-05 in my Kart with a Mychron 4. I like it allot, very relaible and accurate. Biggest issue is that you ahe to mark sart/finish spot. I say spot because it is not a line. You anve to drive over that sopt to re-set the lap. You can set S/F anywhere, I find thru Esses or a slow corner to be best. Sompleace where there really is one line.

Thanks so much for that feedback.. Are you talking about Shenandoah and do you know if other tracks like NJMP,Pocono, Lime Rock etc are preprogrammed with a Start/Finish spot?

Nothing is done with the track. You simply need to select your lap start/finish point at any point during the lap. Next time you go to that track the system recognizes the track based on GPS position, it also remembers the start/finish point. Besides all the data that you collect with the GPS (Speed, Lat & Long forces, elevation, track mapping, time, line, splits) a benifit is not having to deal with a transponder and beacon. I've had several guys in my Kart, GPS allows for not only performance analysis but driver to driver line comparision.

Won't make you go faster only your right foot can do that ! My continental came with an aims micron xl and I'm tempted to Rip it out and go back to good old fashioned gauges! But that's just me.

Andy, my idea was to interface the GPS timing with my Go Pro to analyze the most efficent line and the optimal use of my new Formula V DRS hardware

Andy, you are being too harsh. Our 2011 GoPro video was of excellent quality. Next year we even hope to get video of something other than the camera breaking off on the first practise lap then bouncing down the track into the bushes. Sid

I think that's Ryans fault Sid ! He drives to fast, have him slow down a bit next season so you can get some nice video

I tried to get him to do that at the Oct 22 Shenandoah (Saturday's)race. All he had to do was run 10 cautious laps without blowing the engine up or crashing to win the championship. I thought we had a firm agreement on that. Head nodding up and down, mouth saying "yes", etc. That was until adrenaline kicked in after 5-6 laps and he decides he needs to move up through the field and try to get in the middle of the craziness you and Bill had going on. The kart track he works at uses a wireless cutoff switch. That's the electronic gizmo I need for next year. Maybe I could install one on each of your cars. I get one remote; Dominic gets the other.

Speaking about next year; Pops is over on Apexspeed today picking up a fully dressed aluminum head. He basically stole it for $975.00. Substantial weight savings. Sid

I've done this. You need to use a 3rd party program to syncronize and edit (Dashware and Race Render are 2 that I have played with). There are free nutured versions out ther you can play with. Sync'ing used to be a pain but now I just blip the throttle to 15,000RPM before heading out and I listen for that blip on the video. That becomes an easyly identifiable sync point. The Go-Pro is odd. Worked intermittantly on race car but been bullet proof on Kart.

Since you are talking about me ! Yes after the frame of my car was checked and repaired the decision was made to rebuild it and try it one more season. The alum head was a no-brainer cause my iron head was worn and needed a total rebuild, (Ol Smokey get's retired !) The price was almost the same. And I realise there is a weight penalty. But I don't think Andy is too concerned. I believe I would have to put a Corvette LS-7 in the back of my car to keep up with him !!! Hmmm , now there's an idea. BTW, I like the new logo. See ya in the spring , Pops

Getting back to original post. Anyone know of a simple / cheap system in which you can keep a log of lap times from the car. Besides using a stop watch mounted to the steering wheel. Since I am a one man race team it's been tough getting lap times after practice sessions.

Why don't you guys just ask someone in the paddock to take down some times for you? save your money for the stuff you really need! Like a 36ft motorhome (Call Ian Godard he has one for sale) There is always someone willing to help!
